According to legend, it has two hermits, Wasuthep and Sukatanta Hermit, who are close friends.
One day, both of the hermits draw the ground with a shell shaped and then inviting people to build city together that made a town called "Nakhon Hariphunchai"
After that two hermits went to invite Queen Cham Dhavi who is daughter of the king of Lavo kingdom, from Lop Buri to dominate Lamphun.
Cham Dhavi is a queen who is a first ruler of Haripunchai kingdom where was build 1,343 years ago.
Now a day is Lamphun province where locate in south of Chiang Mai.
Due to the ruler is a princess. Both of hermits have consulted to create a magical amulet.
To be worship for preserving the kingdom and to give morale to the soldiers and people.
They take auspicious clay from all four directions of city, contain with thousand species of flowers and Waans (Sacred wood)mixed with magic and incantation.
They create 2 types of Buddha immage, one of which is called
"Phra Kong" for the security of the city , another type is called
"Phra Rod" for survival of the city.
Once completed all ceremony, they kept '' Phra kong '' at '' Phra Khong Reusi Temple'' where is a main temple locate in North side of city.
and kept '' Phra Rod '' at '' Mahawan Temple '' where is a main temple locate in west side of city.

Currently, there are still groups of people in '' Mahawan '' community that are still conserving and inheriting the wisdom of making '' Phra Rod ''
The amulets in the old days will be molded on the occasion of the battle and war.
They take a local clay that ancient people considered it auspicious clay and fine white clay.
After being burned they will get the cream-yellow clay like the Champaka flower.
Then, They pound thoroughly the clay and sift out the sediment.Until the fine ground meat is mixed with water. Knead until clay is obtained.
Then press on mold of '' Phra Pim Rod ''.The identity of '' Phra Rod '' Lamphun will be noticed, with fingerprints appearing behind the body.
They usually mold '' Phra Rod '' on the day of full moon (Buddha day) which will be completed within 1 day.
Once the mold is finished, allow the amulet to dry it. Then go into the furnace at a temperature of about 600 - 900 degrees celsius.
The wood used to burn '' Phra Rod '' must be the sweet wood such as the longan in order to prevent crack of the clay texture.
