'' Phra Upakut ''

Phra Upakut is an important figure in Burma, Northern Thailand and Laos. He is a benevolent deity who protects against all evils and physical harm and is an auspicious attractor of wealth.
There are many different stories regarding his origin.

According to Sanskrit legend, he was the son of a perfumer and one of the early adherents of the Buddha.

Before the Buddha entered nirvana, he asked Pra Upakut to remain alive until becoming Maitreya, the second coming of the Buddha.



'' Phra Upakut '' of '' Upakut temple'' in Chiang Mai

Chiang mai Buddhists believe that ''Phra Upakut'' is still alive to this day, residing in the middle of the Great Ocean, with a lotus leaf on his head.

They believe that Phra Upakhut will transform himself into a novice when a full moon appears on a Wednesday in every year.

So,That is the reason why they do ''The tak bat peng pud '' or '' tak bat thiang kuen '' which is ceremony of a northern tradition of Thailand.

In that day monks will ask for alms around midnight and More than 10,000 of Buddhists will come to Upakut temples to offering rice, dry food to a monks in midnight.


Chiang mai Buddhists believe that giving offerings to ''Phra Upakut'' will bring them great merit, fortune and prosperity.

You can chant a katha (magic spell) to worship ''Phra Upakut '' as follow :-

Na-mo Dtas-sa Pa-ka-wa-dto A-ra-ha-dto Sam-maa Sam-put-tas-sa (3 times) and then

Upakutto Ja Maha Thero, Samputtena Wiyakato,
Maran Ja Mara Palan Ja, So Itani Maha Thero,
Na Massi Tawa, Patit Tito Ahang Wanthami,
Itanewak Upakuttang Ja Maha Therang,
Yang Yang Upattawang, Chatang Witang Seti,
Asesato Maha Laphang Phawantume.
